New Mexico School for the Deaf records, 1892-[ongoing].

Summary: As of 1997 collection consists of records of the New Mexico School for the Deaf and its predecessors the School for the Deaf and Dumb, and the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb (1892-1984). Includes biennial reports (1902-1912), financial reports, minutes, letter sent and received, legal documents, promotional publications, student rosters, newsletters, one yearbook (1958-1959), six ledger books, and negatives of photographs taken at the School. The newsletters are entitled "New Mexico Progress" and date from various years between 1931 and 1984. The ledger books contain board of trustee minutes (1887-1934), financial transactions (1899-1915), and minutes of a student literary club (1895-1899). Many of the early documents and letters in this collection involve Lars M. Larson, the School's first superintendent.

The School for the Deaf and Dumb was established by a legislative act in 1887 (1887 Laws of N.M., Chp. 31, Sec. 1). The School was managed by the Attorney General, Territorial Auditor, and Treasurer of the Territory. In 1899 a legislative act changed the name to the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb and established a board of trustees to manage the Asylum (1899 Laws of N.M., Chp. 42, Sec. 1-2). In 1955 a legislative act changed the name to the School for the Deaf (1955 Laws of N.M., Chp. 63, Sec. 1)....
